Studying Shakespeare is difficult. The language is tough and the bard is a bit long-winded for today’s teenager (possibly for this teacher too…) so in order to combat these challenges, my 4UI class has been reading summaries of Hamlet as well as watching the Kenneth Branaugh version of the film.

We have also been using to back channel while watching the film. What I have discovered is that my students LOVE to back channel! I know this isn’t a new teaching strategy, but it has been such an engaging tool for these students. They are able to chat while watching to enhance their understanding. They are also critiquing the interpretation of the text and making connections to support their ideas. It’s awesome!

Here are a couple screen shots of our discussions so you can see their learning.
